TremorsCast 7: Kevin Bacon interview

It’s been a long time coming, but episode seven of the TremorsCast finally exists and includes some of my exclusive interview with Kevin Bacon for Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors.

This episode is due to arrive in iTunes on the 19th of January 2016, 26 years to the day since Tremors was released into US cinemas. My plan is to release at least one new episode of the podcast each month in 2016, bringing you news from around the Tremors universe and audio from some of the 50 plus interviews I carried out for the book.

It looks like 2016 is going to be a busy one for Tremors fans, with the recent news that Kevin Bacon plans to bring Tremors back to the small screen along with Blumhouse Productions. I’ve also heard rumblings that Universal are interested in a Tremors 6.

2016 also marks the 20th anniversary of Tremors 2’s release on home video, and I’ll be covering that and more throughout the year.

Kevin told me about his initial feelings about the role of Val McKee:

“There was something fun about that character and the relationship between those two guys, grown men who were kind of losers. When you have two losers who are put into the situation of having to rise to a level of heroism, I think it can be kind of fun. So I was really taking a flyer on it, but I can’t say I was feeling, ‘Oh wow, this is the one.’”

Kevin Bacon returning to Tremors with TV reboot

kevin-bacon-tremors-620x413

As I sort-of predicted in the final pages of Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors, the franchise is about to return to the small screen in a Kevin Bacon-produced Tremors reboot, with Kevin also set to reprise his role of Valentine McKee.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and numerous other news site, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, home to the hugely successful Paranormal Activity films, will be developing the series based on the 1990 original. The Secret Circle‘s Andrew Miller will write the script.

Whether any of the four sequels, or the short-lived 1994 TV series, will be referenced in the new show is unclear.

When I spoke to Kevin earlier in 2015, he was clearly happy to be remembered for his work with Tremors, and welcomed the idea of a reboot:

“This guy is one of the few characters I’ve played that I’d be interested in seeing where he is 25 years later. Who does that guy grow into? There’s a lot of possibilities about what could have happened in his life in 25 years – for me it always comes back to the character and that would be fun to explore.”

What’s not yet clear is whether the original creators of Tremors, namely Stampede Production’s S.S. Wilson, Brent Maddock, Ron Underwood and Nancy Roberts, will be involved with the new series in any capacity.

The team very publicly distanced themselves from October’s Tremors 5: Bloodlines when it was revealed Universal Studios wouldn’t allow them creative control of the project. The result is a film that bears little resemblance to the original series.

One of the main reasons 1990’s Tremors remains a popular film is down to the script, which gave Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross and the rest of the cast something great to work with. Removing the original writers is to remove the essential element that makes Tremors what it is.

Wouldn’t you want them on board for a reunion, even if that’s just to advise the newbies?

I’m sure I speak for most Tremors fans when I wish Kevin, Blumhouse and Miller the greatest success with the project, just please remember why we’re still celebrating Tremors 25 years later.

Keep an eye on this blog, Facebook and Twitter for more updates on the new series as they happen.

Oh, and you might want to grab yourself a copy of Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors while you can to be ready for the new project – there’s lots more from Kevin on his love of Tremors and thoughts about the future direction it might take…

Review: Seeking Perfection signing at LA’s Creature Features

Outside Creature Features

It was almost two weeks ago that I made my second 2015 visit to Los Angeles for Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors, this time for a signing at the city’s Creature Features store on Sunday October 25th.

Arriving at Creature Features

While my first visit was to celebrate Tremors‘ 25th anniversary in the cinema ahead of the book’s publication, this time I actually had finished copies to sign.

Display of Seeking Perfection

I had just over 6 weeks to prepare for the event and I decided to invite along as many people as I could from the original franchise produced by Stampede Entertainment – Tremors 1 to 4 and the TV series.

The first people to say yes were co-creators and writers, S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, along with director Ron Underwood and actor Robert “Melvin” Jayne.

LA Tremors book signing on October 25th

CFsigning

It’s been six months since my last trip to LA, when I attended the fantastic 25th anniversary screening of Tremors in the company of many cast and crew…and now I’m about to head back.

I’ve been invited by the guys at Creature Features in LA (who organised the March screening) to attend a special signing of Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors on Sunday October 25th between 1pm and 3pm at the Burbank store, in the company of many cast and crew from the Tremors franchise, kicking off with writers SS Wilson and Brent Maddock, director Ron Underwood and Melvin himself, Robert Jayne!

There’ll also be a few more guests announced in the coming weeks (see below for updates), hopefully including someone from every version of the films and TV series, so keep an eye on this blog, Facebook, Twitter and Creature Features’ Facebook page for updates.

There’s also more information on the Creature Features website, where you can pre-order signed copies of the book – please note that only books pre-ordered and picked up on the day OR bought in the store on the day can be signed.

This is likely to be the largest gathering of cast and crew from the Tremors universe ever assembled, making it very much a once in a lifetime event for fans.

September 23 update! I’m now delighted to announce that actors Shawn Christian (Desert Jack Sawyer, Tremors 3: Back to Perfection), Victor Browne (Tyler Reed, Tremors: The Series) and Gladise Jimenez (Rosalita, Tremors: The Series) will be attending the event, along with Tremors 3‘s casting director, Craig Campobasso, and illustrator Donn Greer, who was behind the original Tremors poster designs that can be found in the book. More guests soon to be announced!

See you in October!

Empire reviews Seeking Perfection

book-reviews-aug-2015

Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors has been on release for just over a month now, with some fantastic reader feedback now being supplemented by a review in the UK’s biggest film magazine, Empire.

Explaining that the “rollickingly fun” Tremors has never been treated with much respect, the magazine goes on to state that “this high-access tell-all … [is an] unexpected treat”, awarding it four out of five stars.

As a long-time reader of Empire this is great moment for the book and it’s good to know people are responding well to it – review copies are still available for anyone else interested in covering the release!

2015 Tremors screening updates

First-Tremors-panel

You wait years for a screening of Tremors at a cinema, then three of them come along at once. Admittedly two of them have been initiated by me, but still…

Yes, fans of the best sci-fi/horror/comedy/western starring Kevin Bacon ever made are in luck this anniversary year, with the news that March’s 25th anniversary Tremors screening wasn’t your only chance to see it on the big screen.

As of writing this post on 17th August 2015, three more screenings will take place, two in the UK and one in the US, and I’ll update this page as and when I hear of more.

3 September update: see another new addition for New York

New York, 10th September

Not only did Kevin Bacon take the time to talk to me for Seeking Perfection, but he’s also agreed to take part in a post-screening Q&A at the Alamo Drafthouse Yonkers this month. As far as I’m aware this is the first time he’s attended a screening of Tremors in 25 years, so this is a must-visit event for every fan in the area – tickets are on sale now.

Glasgow, 13th September

The first will be here in my home country of Scotland on Sunday 13th September at the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) from 19.30. I’ll be introducing Tremors before it’s shown from a 35mm print. Then there’ll be copies of Seeking Perfection on sale across the road at Glasgow’s CCA, where I’ll also be signing them. Tickets are on sale now, and there’s a Facebook event.

Edinburgh, 20th September

Then, one week later, there’ll be another screening in my home city of Edinburgh at the city’s Filmhouse cinema. Once again I’ll be introducing the film before it’s screened from a DCP/digital print. This time the film will be followed by a live Skype Q&A with director Ron Underwood, which I’m very excited about. Copies of the book will be on sale (with optional signing) and tickets are on sale from the Filmhouse website now.

Louisville, 1st October

Finally, Tremors will be shown in the US on 1st October at the Louisville International Festival of Film in Kentucky, with Michael “Burt Gummer” Gross on hand to take part in a Q&A to celebrate the anniversary. Interestingly, the festival’s co-founder is Conrad Bachmann, who played the unfortunate Dr. Jim in Tremors, so I suspect he’ll be involved in this event as well. Tickets will be on sale from 1st September from the official website.

If you know of any more screenings please let me know and I’ll add them to this page.

Kevin Bacon wants more Tremors, Universal doesn’t

Kevin Bacon in Tremors

Seeking Perfection has been out just over a week now, and the world (well, Tremors fans who have bought the book) is discovering all about the past, present and future of the franchise, including the fact Kevin Bacon wants to return in a new movie.

Yes, you read that right. Kevin Bacon wants to return to Perfection for a second bout of Graboid hunting, as WOW247 noted today in an article on the book.

They quoted Kevin, who was responding to my question about whether or not he’d want to play Valentine McKee again:

“This guy is one of the few characters I’ve played that I’d be interested in seeing where he is 25 years later. Who does that guy grow into? There’s a lot of possibilities about what could have happened in his life in 25 years – for me it always comes back to the character and that would be fun to explore.”

If you’ve bought the book, you’ll know that Kevin talks at length about his time working on the film, what it was like working alongside Fred Ward and how he found spending many weeks shooting in Lone Pine.

He also discusses where he sees himself today in relation to the Tremors franchise, which is about to grow once again with the release of Tremors 5: Bloodlines in October.

But, while Kevin wants to battle Graboids once again, as he says in the interview, the studio has other ideas: “Universal doesn’t seem to be interested, so it’s moot.”

Making another big screen Tremors movie wouldn’t be cheap, with the marketing budget adding to the production costs. When Universal can make a new direct-to-DVD sequel for a couple of million dollars, it’s perhaps understandable that they wouldn’t want to take a chance on a cinema version.

Then again, plenty of films with less audience recognition than Tremors are given a shot at a big screen release, so it’s not impossible…

Would you like to see Tremors back on the big screen with Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross and a new cast? Let me know in the comments below!

5 things we learned from the Tremors 5 trailer

image

Tremors 5: Bloodlines may have taken more than a decade to make it from script to screen (more on that later), but today we finally got a glimpse of what fans around the globe have long been waiting for: the trailer.

Universal Home Entertainment released the trailer for the fifth film in the franchise, showing us what we can expect come this October, when Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) is once more recruited to go Graboid hunting, only this time he’s headed to South Africa.

So what did we learn from the Tremors 5 trailer that we didn’t know before?

1. Tremors 5 has a tagline

image

image

image

2. Burt is back

We knew Burt Gummer was being brought back for another mission, but in the trailer we get to hear him utter the words, “You’ve got Graboids” before seeing him prepare for attack more than once.

image

image

image

image

image

3. …and so are the Graboids and Ass Blasters… sort of

We’ve been promised new versions of the Graboids and Ass Blasters, and the trailer teases them more than once.

image

Is that a Graboid above?

image

And these must be Ass Blasters? They look almost Shrieker-y and Graboid-y – that mouth – at the same time.

image

4. Burt has some new allies

image

Every Tremors movie gives us a new duo to lead the fight against the creatures, with Tremors 5 offering up Scream‘s Jamie Kennedy as the tech-savvy Travis (above and below).

image

There’s also a new female character in the shape of Nyala (Pearl Thusi), who appears to know her way around a bow and arrow…

image

5. There are quite a few movie references

Something immediately obvious from the short trailer is that there are quite a few references to other movies, starting with the kitchen scene from Jurassic Park

image

…along with a shot that’s very Hunger Games

image

…while Burt quotes “The bitch is back” from the Alien 3 poster and trailer…

image

…and in one of the final shots of the trailer, Travis misquotes Die Hard‘s John McClane as he comes face to face with what looks like a next generation Ass Blaster…

image

Tremors 5 is available to buy from 6 October 2015 and is up for pre-order right now as a Blu-ray and DVD

I detail the film’s 10 year journey from script to screen in my new book, Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors – you’ll want to read all about the twists and turns behind the scenes before you see the film!
