Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward to star in 8-part Tremors series

Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward to star in 8-part Tremors series

Kevin Bacon’s Tremors TV pilot looks set to go to series with an 8-episode order, with Fred Ward returning as Earl Bassett for the first time since 1996’s Tremors 2: Aftershocks.

It was in August 2017 that we last heard anything substantial about the latest TV outing for Tremors, a franchise that has now split into two factions as Michael Gross continues to lead a series of direct-to-DVD film sequels and 13-part TV series (Tremors 6: A Cold Day in Hell hits streaming in a few weeks time) as survivalist Burt Gummer, while Bacon’s reboot ignores everything after the 1990 original, his character of Val McKee still battling Graboids in Perfection, Nevada.

In a tweet from director Richard Clark (Outlander, Doctor Who), he appeared to confirm that the pilot is going to series: “Universal shooting 8-part TV Tremors this summer with Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward! I’m begging to direct! Scripts a lot of fun.”

While Ward was rumoured to part of the pilot, this is the first word that he’ll be back alongside Bacon and the giant worms. Universal and SyFy have yet to confirm the news.

According to the synopsis for the pilot TV movie written by Andrew Miller, “the killer Graboid worms that nearly destroyed Perfection, NV, 25 years ago are back, and the town’s only hope for survival is Valentine McKee (Bacon), who beat them once. But to do it again he’ll have to overcome age, alcohol and a delusional hero complex.”

It’s believed that Miller will also serve as showrunner on the SyFy series alongside executive producers Kevin Bacon, David Schiff and Jessica Rhoades.

Bacon told to me why he’s interested in a reboot in this interview I carried out with him for my 2015 book, Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors.

New Tremors 6: A Cold Day in Hell trailer surfaces

New Tremors 6: A Cold Day in Hell trailer surfaces

Guns, Graboids and more guns.

Burt and Travis are heading back to DVD and streaming in the latest Tremors sequel, Tremors 6: A Cold Day in Hell, which saw its trailer debut online today.

As for the actual plot of the film, well that’s not entirely clear from the trailer, which gives us running, explosions and guns. Lots of guns. We also catch a glimpse of an Assblaster in the Arctic and what appears to be a strain of Graboid last seen in Tremors 5: Bloodlines.

See what you think:

As has pointed out elsewhere, the film sees Burt Gummer replace his iconic Atlanta Hawks baseball cap with a Chicago Cubs hat (Michael Gross is a Cubs fan), which is a pretty major development for the franchise (apart from the change in Graboid design of course).

There’s almost certainly going to be a liberal helping of humour in Tremors 6 (that’s a key Travis character trait) but it also seems the grittiness of Bloodlines has been raised up a notch. A colder tone for a cold climate?

Universal are again distancing themselves from the warmer feel of the Stampede films (Tremors 1 – 4) and the first SyFy TV show (not to be confused with the forthcoming Kevin Bacon SyFy pilot).

As for that plot, well here’s some more from the official press release:

“Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) and his son Travis Welker (Jamie Kennedy) find themselves up to their ears in Graboids and Ass-Blasters when they head to Canada to investigate a series of deadly giant-worm attacks. Arriving at a remote research facility in the artic tundra, Burt begins to suspect that Graboids are secretly being weaponised, but before he can prove his theory, he is sidelined by Graboid venom. With just 48 hours to live, the only hope is to create an antidote from fresh venom — but to do that, someone will have to figure out how to milk a Graboid!”

I also looked at 6 things we know about Tremors 6 last year on this very blog, which does reveal a few things not seen in the trailer.

6 things we know so far about Tremors 6

6 things we know so far about Tremors 6

With principal photography on Tremors 6 now completed, details have started to emerge about what we can expect to see in the new film that’s currently due to premiere early in 2018.

From locations to monsters, old favourites to new faces, there’s a lot out there if you know where to look.

Just be aware that some of the following information could be considered spoilers, so look away now if you don’t want to know more…

1. Burt and Travis are heading for Canada…with Ass Blasters

While full plot details are quite rightly thin on the ground, Universal have released some information on the next outing for Burt Gummer and his offspring, Travis Welker.

According to the studio’s VP Glenn Ross, this is going to be “the craziest, most over-the-top movie in the Tremors saga to date.” Here’s the synopsis:

“Milk a Graboid”? I have no words…

2. Walter Chang’s Market is back

Yes, 14 years since we last saw Chang’s Market in Tremors: The Series, Tremors 6 director Don Michael Paul recently posted the above photo on Instagram, proof that at least some of the film takes place in the town of Perfection. It remains to be seen whether Jodi is still running the store.

3. The old school Graboids (and effects) are returning

Michael Gross recently posted some video from the South Africa shoot on his Facebook page (which is a must-follow for Tremors fans), revealing some of the work that goes into laying the groundwork for a Graboid to be pulled through the dirt. This suggests that some old-school practical creatures could be seen this time around rather than CG.

Gross also noted in the comments that the Graboids will be closer to the “classic” looking creatures seen in earlier films than those in Tremors 5: Bloodlines.

4. Val McKee’s daughter will be appearing

OK, so this one isn’t 100% confirmed, but the IMDb cast list shows that actress Jamie-Lee Money will be playing “Valerie McKee” in Tremors 6 – when copied into a tweet mentioning this, Money retweeted it, suggesting there’s some grain of truth in the rumour.

5. Jamie Kennedy will get eaten by a Graboid

Remember when Burt Gummer got himself trapped in the belly of a Graboid in Tremors 3: Back to Perfection? Like father, like son, as Jamie Kennedy’s Travis Welker has been spotted inside one of the creatures in photos from the set. That could be punishment for all those terrible nicknames he used for Burt in T5 – “Gummy Bear”?

6. Tanya van Graan is the film’s female lead

South African actress Tanya van Graan will star as Dr Rita Sims alongside Michael Gross and Jamie Kennedy – van Graan currently has five films in post-production according to IMDb, and a quick YouTube search shows that she’s starred in numerous adverts over the years and been named one of South Africa’s most beautiful women. But does she know how to fight Graboids?

Tremors 6 will shoot in South Africa

Returning director Don Michael Paul hinted at it in a series of Instagram posts, now Tremors star Michael Gross has confirmed it: the franchise is returning to South Africa for Tremors 6.

Gross revealed in September 2016 that Tremors 6 was going into production, with Don Michael Paul posting photos from a location scout at Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve in November.

“IT IS HAPPENING!” So screamed the announcement on Michael Gross’ Facebook page last night as he revealed that Tremors 6 has been given the greenlight from Universal Studios Entertainment.

He went on to confirm that his Tremors 5 co-star, Jamie Kennedy, would be back for more monster hunting, along with director Don Michael Paul.

Nothing else is known about the latest entry in the Tremors saga, though it’s likely the film won’t see the return of original creators, SS Wilson and Brent Maddock, who declined to be part of the rebooted franchise back in 2014 when they discovered they wouldn’t have any creative control over the project – read their full statement.
