Tremors 6 will shoot in South Africa

Returning director Don Michael Paul hinted at it in a series of Instagram posts, now Tremors star Michael Gross has confirmed it: the franchise is returning to South Africa for Tremors 6.

Gross revealed in September 2016 that Tremors 6 was going into production, with Don Michael Paul posting photos from a location scout at Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve in November.

Amazon’s Tremors series is ‘a Donald Trump story’ reveals writer

Amazon’s Tremors series is ‘a Donald Trump story’ reveals writer

The writer of Amazon’s upcoming Tremors mini-series has revealed that Kevin Bacon will star as “a horrible loser” and that the town of Perfection is “coming face to face with failure”.

Things have been pretty quiet on the Tremors front of late, with news of the rival TV and direct-to-video sequels relegated to occasional social media posts or regurgitated news items on entertainment blogs.

This changed earlier this week during the 300th edition of The Writers Panel podcast, which featured interviews with a number of Hollywood screenwriters.

One of those on the panel was Andrew Miller, who is penning the 10-episode Tremors series for Amazon. When asked to talk about the show by host Ben Blacker, Miller revealed that the series is “about failure.” More

TremorsCast 7: Kevin Bacon interview

It’s been a long time coming, but episode seven of the TremorsCast finally exists and includes some of my exclusive interview with Kevin Bacon for Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors.

This episode is due to arrive in iTunes on the 19th of January 2016, 26 years to the day since Tremors was released into US cinemas. My plan is to release at least one new episode of the podcast each month in 2016, bringing you news from around the Tremors universe and audio from some of the 50 plus interviews I carried out for the book.

It looks like 2016 is going to be a busy one for Tremors fans, with the recent news that Kevin Bacon plans to bring Tremors back to the small screen along with Blumhouse Productions. I’ve also heard rumblings that Universal are interested in a Tremors 6.

2016 also marks the 20th anniversary of Tremors 2’s release on home video, and I’ll be covering that and more throughout the year.

Kevin told me about his initial feelings about the role of Val McKee:

“There was something fun about that character and the relationship between those two guys, grown men who were kind of losers. When you have two losers who are put into the situation of having to rise to a level of heroism, I think it can be kind of fun. So I was really taking a flyer on it, but I can’t say I was feeling, ‘Oh wow, this is the one.’”

Kevin Bacon returning to Tremors with TV reboot

kevin-bacon-tremors-620x413

As I sort-of predicted in the final pages of Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors, the franchise is about to return to the small screen in a Kevin Bacon-produced Tremors reboot, with Kevin also set to reprise his role of Valentine McKee.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and numerous other news site, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, home to the hugely successful Paranormal Activity films, will be developing the series based on the 1990 original. The Secret Circle‘s Andrew Miller will write the script.

Whether any of the four sequels, or the short-lived 1994 TV series, will be referenced in the new show is unclear.

When I spoke to Kevin earlier in 2015, he was clearly happy to be remembered for his work with Tremors, and welcomed the idea of a reboot:

“This guy is one of the few characters I’ve played that I’d be interested in seeing where he is 25 years later. Who does that guy grow into? There’s a lot of possibilities about what could have happened in his life in 25 years – for me it always comes back to the character and that would be fun to explore.”

What’s not yet clear is whether the original creators of Tremors, namely Stampede Production’s S.S. Wilson, Brent Maddock, Ron Underwood and Nancy Roberts, will be involved with the new series in any capacity.

The team very publicly distanced themselves from October’s Tremors 5: Bloodlines when it was revealed Universal Studios wouldn’t allow them creative control of the project. The result is a film that bears little resemblance to the original series.

One of the main reasons 1990’s Tremors remains a popular film is down to the script, which gave Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross and the rest of the cast something great to work with. Removing the original writers is to remove the essential element that makes Tremors what it is.

Wouldn’t you want them on board for a reunion, even if that’s just to advise the newbies?

I’m sure I speak for most Tremors fans when I wish Kevin, Blumhouse and Miller the greatest success with the project, just please remember why we’re still celebrating Tremors 25 years later.

Keep an eye on this blog, Facebook and Twitter for more updates on the new series as they happen.

Oh, and you might want to grab yourself a copy of Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors while you can to be ready for the new project – there’s lots more from Kevin on his love of Tremors and thoughts about the future direction it might take…

Kevin Bacon wants more Tremors, Universal doesn’t

Kevin Bacon in Tremors

Seeking Perfection has been out just over a week now, and the world (well, Tremors fans who have bought the book) is discovering all about the past, present and future of the franchise, including the fact Kevin Bacon wants to return in a new movie.

Yes, you read that right. Kevin Bacon wants to return to Perfection for a second bout of Graboid hunting, as WOW247 noted today in an article on the book.

They quoted Kevin, who was responding to my question about whether or not he’d want to play Valentine McKee again:

“This guy is one of the few characters I’ve played that I’d be interested in seeing where he is 25 years later. Who does that guy grow into? There’s a lot of possibilities about what could have happened in his life in 25 years – for me it always comes back to the character and that would be fun to explore.”

If you’ve bought the book, you’ll know that Kevin talks at length about his time working on the film, what it was like working alongside Fred Ward and how he found spending many weeks shooting in Lone Pine.

He also discusses where he sees himself today in relation to the Tremors franchise, which is about to grow once again with the release of Tremors 5: Bloodlines in October.

But, while Kevin wants to battle Graboids once again, as he says in the interview, the studio has other ideas: “Universal doesn’t seem to be interested, so it’s moot.”

Making another big screen Tremors movie wouldn’t be cheap, with the marketing budget adding to the production costs. When Universal can make a new direct-to-DVD sequel for a couple of million dollars, it’s perhaps understandable that they wouldn’t want to take a chance on a cinema version.

Then again, plenty of films with less audience recognition than Tremors are given a shot at a big screen release, so it’s not impossible…

Would you like to see Tremors back on the big screen with Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross and a new cast? Let me know in the comments below!

Buy Seeking Perfection and win a Tremors tee

Seeking Perfection: The Unofficial Guide to Tremors has been out just a few days, and I’m happy to say the response has been positive:

As a thank you to everyone who’s bought the book, which covers the history of the Tremors franchise in its 25th anniversary year, I’ve teamed up with the guys over at Nerdoh Clothing to offer a fantastic giveaway of a t-shirt that should be in the wardrobe of any self-respecting Tremors fan.

The Walter Chang tee is a fine tribute to the owner of Perfection’s Market, and it usually retails for around the £17/$26 mark on the Nerdoh website (I should know, I bought one myself last year).

Walter-Chang

To be in with the chance of owning one of these beauties, simply purchase a copy of Seeking Perfection, paperback or ebook, and forward the proof of purchase email to me at tremorsguide@gmail.com before midnight on Friday 21 August (that’s UK time).

That’s it.

I’ll randomly choose three names from Burt Gummer’s Atlanta Hawks cap and they’ll each receive one of Nerdoh’s Tremors tees. Just remember to send the size you’d like to receive and your postal address, wherever that is around the globe.

Thanks to Nerdoh for their support of the book!

Please note: this competition is now closed, but keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter for more giveaways.

Seeking Perfection is out now from the following retailers, with more being added all the time (signed copies aren’t available yet, but I’ll make them available soon and offer signed bookplates for anyone who’d like to affix one to the interior of a book they buy now):

Book update #1: Addressing The Bacon Situation

I thought it was about time I wrote a short update on how things are going with Seeking Perfection, assuming anyone is interested in that sort of thing. I also wanted to address The Bacon Situation.

The first draft

As I’ve been tweeting and Facebooking recently, I’m currently writing the first draft of the book, taking hundreds of hours of interviews and trying to condense them into something that makes sense.

Not that the people I spoke to didn’t make sense, it’s just that sometimes there are conflicting memories of who exactly said or did what, or else there’s a reference to a story that was told in another chapter that might work better elsewhere…I know, I’m already getting boring. The point is that the book is now underway, something that seemed impossible just over a year ago when I decided to try and get this project off the ground.

Back then, I knew I wanted to read more about the Tremors films but couldn’t find much out there. Dedicated Tremors fans can trawl the internet and DVD extras for snippets of stories, but there isn’t much out there from the lady who had to oversee the transportation of the Graboids from LA to Lone Pine on the first film, the guy who played Señor Ortega in Tremors 2 or a writer of an unmade script from Tremors: The Series. If I was able to track any of them down, would any of them want to talk to a fan in the UK via Skype?
